Each dot is one registration (registration years 1996–2018), placed by the lead and atypicality of its goods/services description, standardized within the class and registration year. Color is the latest gate the record reaches; later gates draw on top. Firms whose owner appears in SEC financial reporting are orange; owners with an IPO marker are red.
Lead and atypicality are the paper’s production scoring (50 global themes, per-filing five-year reference windows). Tiers: grey — cancelled at the five-year proof of continued use (a dated §8/§71 cancellation at registration age 4.0–8.5 years); blue — passed the five-year proof; orange — owner name-matched to SEC financial reporting records; red — owner carries an 8-A registration or IPO date. Owner outcomes are properties of the owner, not the mark, so one public firm colors all of its registrations. Grey and blue dots are a random sample capped at 22,000 per class; orange and red dots are complete. The 2018 cohort’s five-year window is fractionally censored. Coordinates are clipped at ±3.5 standard deviations. Back to the online appendix.
